Fostering Executive Function At School and Home

Marin County Psychological Association Presents:

Sean G. McCormick, M.Ed. Professional Education Therapist

Fostering Executive Function at School and Home

This presentation provides a replicable methodology for supporting the development of executive function skills in youth and young adults. Broadly speaking, executive function skills are those which allow individuals to engage in goal-oriented behaviors, while reflecting on their approaches to increase the effectiveness of their behaviors over time. Peer reviewed research by Adele Diamond (2016) has demonstrated that effectively supporting executive function development is a key predictor of “school readiness,” “job success,” “mental health outcomes,” “marital harmony,” and other key indicators of overall life satisfaction. Given the connection between AD/HD and executive function challenges, therapists, psychologists and assessment professionals are likely to encounter many clients who need guidance and support in improving their executive function skills. This presentation will provide actionable strategies to support them in identifying, evaluating and supporting improved executive function skills.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will describe at least 2 strategies that can be used when using solution-focused questioning with middle, high school and college students with executive function challenges
  2. Participants will state what the P.I.N.G methodology is and in what context it can be used
  3. Participants will describe the three steps of a Family-Team Meeting
  4. Participants will identify two steps on how to use Google Tasks and Templates
