B-Old Aging: What every psychologist needs to know about working with older adults

The population in Marin County has a median age that is twelve years higher than the rest of California. With a growing number of baby boomers in the United States and an aging population in Marin County, it is crucial to have the ability to recognize prevalent geriatric psychological disorders. This is necessary in order to offer effective support to elderly clients, their families, and caregivers.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the most common forms of geriatric psychological disorders.
  • List two specific measures to assess and treat geriatric psychological disorders.
  • Describe one wayto refer a patient for in-depth assessment of geriatric psychological disorders.
  • Identify two cultural differences in aging.

Dr. Melinda Ginne is a gero-psychologist with a forty-year career specializing in geriatrics and the treatment of the psychological aspects of acute, chronic, and life-threatening medical illness.
