Interoceptive Exposure: Overcoming Fear of Panic

Marin County Psychological Association Presents:

Elizabeth McMahon, PhD.

Interoceptive Exposure: Overcoming Fear of Panic

This 2-hour accredited CE live webinar is designed for mental health clinicians interested in learning when, why, and how to use interoceptive exposure with clients who fear the somatic sensations of panic or anxiety. In this hands-on workshop, participants will practice interoceptive exposure exercises along with the presenter. The rationale and evidence base for interoceptive exposure will be reviewed. Details of and contraindications for each exercise will be presented, including how to create an interoceptive exposure hierarchy that is individually tailored for the client. There will be time for questions and discussion.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the workshop, attendees will be able to:

  • Explain the rationale for interoceptive exposure in treating panic disorder.
  • List at least three interoceptive exposure exercises used to treat fear of panic sensations.
  • Describe at least two of the steps involved in constructing an interoceptive exposure hierarchy.

.

Interoceptive exposure is one of the most powerful, evidence-based therapeutic techniques for treating panic disorder and can be helpful when treating other anxiety disorders where the client fears the bodily sensations of anxiety. Unfortunately, interoceptive exposure is not always taught in graduate programs and is underused by many therapists in practice. This workshop will equip attendees to add this tool to their treatment practice.
