Effective Therapy with Clients with Chronic Illness/Disability 

This practical workshop focuses on several key skills in working effectively with clients with Chronic Illness/ Disability. Emphasis is on culturally-sensitive and evidence-based interventions to increase resiliency and agency. Disability-affirmative and mind/body interventions for symptom, pain and stress management will be discussed. We integrate research, vignettes and experiential activities.

 

Learning Objectives:

 

  1. Name two of the nine areas of disability affirmative therapy.
  2. Describe and understand the most common microaggressions.
  3. Apply one mind-body intervention to a vignette.
  4. Identify common symptoms of Chronic Illness/ Disability that can be mistaken for mental health issues or treatment resistance

Pearl Werfel, Ph.D. has a private practice in San Francisco specializing in wellness, chronic illness and stress and pain mitigation. She is the lead author of Multiple SclerosisAdvances in Psychotherapy-Evidenced-Based Practices. (2016; Hogrefe), a trainer of mental health professionals for the National MS Society, a consultant for Can Do Multiple Sclerosis and Chair of the CPA CARE Executive Committee.

Rhoda Olkin, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Professor at CSPP, Emeryville, and the author of three books on the intersection of clinical psychology and disability studies. She has a private practice and serves as an expert witness on disability cases. As a polio-survivor, she has been interested in disability in the context of parenting, partnering, and intersectionality.
